International Women’s Day 8th March 2011

Folksy : Showcasing the work of independent UK artists, designers and crafters.100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day

Dear friends, we invite you all to join us in celebration of the global event that takes place today, 8th March 2011 – the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

Celebrated for the first time in 1911

Back in 1911 International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time with one million men and women attending rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and to end the general discrimination levelled at the female of the species. 100 years on the battle for equality continues but the day has become a global event celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In the UK alone there are over 400 different events planned for today.

Has the role of women in society changed since then?

Well, according to Unicef, “Women perform 66% of the world’s work, produce 50% of the food, but earn 10% of the income and own 1% of the property.”

The United Nations set up different themes globally for International Women’s Day each year and every country chooses a theme which is relevant for them. For example, Women in Decision Making, World Free of Violence Against Women, Celebrating the Past Planning for the Future.

We have chosen our theme for this day to be the Celebration of the Creative Talent of Women at Folksy. There are so many of us there. So talented and so creative and all of these flowers and bouquets are for you to enjoy. So please have a look and share your thoughts on Women’s role in modern society, maybe you have your own themes?

Please remember if you would like to see more of any item just click on it’s image and you will be taken straight to their Folksy shop.
